Our second issue of The Regulator for 2026 is here. This latest edition focuses on NOPSEMA's investigation function, outlining how serious incidents are examined to identify root causes, lessons learned and, where appropriate, enforcement action. We explain why investigations take the time they do and highlight recent investment in specialist investigation capability to improve the quality and timeline of investigations.

Work health and safety is another strong theme throughout this edition. Articles explore the ongoing risks associated with offshore lifting operations, with human factors, maintenance shortcomings and procedural failures identified as key contributors to incidents.

The publication also covers NOPSEMA's Better Practice Forum on psychosocial health, which reinforced the need to manage hazards such as bullying, harassment, fatigue and remote work with the same level of attention as safety risks.

We also feature articles on stakeholder confidence in NOPSEMA and the growing offshore renewables sector. Results from the 2025 Stakeholder Engagement Survey show strong confidence in NOPSEMA's independence, professionalism and effectiveness, while the Offshore Infrastructure Regulator (OIR) provides insights into its inspection approach as offshore renewable energy projects progress from planning to operational activities.
