Managing psychosocial hazards is still a relatively new regulatory frontier for the offshore oil and gas industry compared to other health and safety factors. To help duty holders understand what’s required and how to respond effectively, NOPSEMA has released new guidance material designed to support compliance with safety case obligations.

The guidance note has been revised to reflect changes to the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006 and the Safety Regulations introduced in June 2025. It also includes an updated definition of psychosocial hazards aligned with work health and safety legislation and the Safe Work Australia model Code of Practice on Managing psychosocial hazards at work.

The revised guidance provides further detail on measures to control psychosocial hazards in offshore energy workplaces, drawing on relevant codes of practice and current research.

NOPSEMA is inviting feedback on the updated guidance note. The public consultation is open until Monday 6 July 2026.
