NOPSEMA workshop on operational integrity of contracted equipment

NOPSEMA recently conducted a workshop to communicate lessons learned from recent inspections of contracted equipment on mobile offshore drilling units (MODU) facilities, and to identify and promulgate good industry practices and regulatory expectations in the area.
The workshop was attended by members of the Drilling Industry Steering Committee of the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA), members of the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) and representatives from service/equipment suppliers of well intervention equipment EXPRO, Halliburton and Schlumberger.
Recent inspections on MODUs identified a trend of significant safety risk gaps in the management of contracted equipment for well intervention activities, resulting in enforcement action against titleholders, rig operators and third party equipment/service providers.
NOPSEMA identified this as an opportunity to engage industry in a collaborative forum to facilitate better planning and communication between all parties involved with respect to contracted equipment, and so initiated the planning of a workshop in consultation with industry associations and representatives.
The workshop participants and NOPSEMA met to share experiences and learnings, and identify practical solutions to common challenges. Presentations from NOPSEMA, ConocoPhillips, BHP Billiton, and Ensco were followed by facilitated panel sessions focusing on key challenge areas. Through robust discussion a number of solutions have emerged for further development by industry.
